The International Documentary Challenge was started in 2006 by Doug Whyte of KDHX Community Media. In the past 6 years, there have been more than 600 participating filmmakers from 20 countries, including Canada, Mexico, Bulgaria, Israel, The Netherlands, Japan, Kosovo, Germany, the United States, and many more.
Films made during the Doc Challenge have screened at numerous international film festivals including Hot Docs Canadian International Film Festival, Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, Dokufest in Kosovo, St. Louis International Film Festival, MountainFilm in Telluride, and many more.
Doc Challenge filmmakers have also gained exposure at independent theatres such as The Northwest Film Forum in Seattle, Washington; The National Film Board of Canada Theatre in Toronto, Ontario; The Hollywood Theatre in Portland, Oregon; The Webster Film Series in Saint Louis, Missouri; The AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, Maryland; and IFP Chicago.
Doc Challenge films have also received national and international television broadcasts on PBS' P.O.V., The Documentary Channel, Current TV, Free Speech TV, and SBS Australia.
